Johannesburg, 5 February 2024 – It is with profound sadness that we learned of the passing of Namibian President Hage Geingob yesterday at the age of 82. As announced by his office last month, President Geingob had begun cancer treatment after the discovery of cancerous cells during a routine medical check-up.
Having dedicated his life to the liberation struggle since his youth, President Geingob was a towering figure in Namibia’s journey to independence and democracy. As the chief architect of Namibia’s constitution, he laid the foundations of freedom, justice and equality that have guided the country since 1990. During his presidency starting in 2015, he strove to uplift the lives of all Namibians, reflecting his lifelong fight against inequality.
Even as he battled cancer, President Geingob continued to serve his duties with dedication till the very end. His passing is a monumental loss for Namibia and the region. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, the people of Namibia, and all those mourning this immense loss. Though he is no longer with us physically, his vision for an equitable and inclusive Namibia will continue to inspire generations to come.
On behalf of the SADC Business Council, we pay tribute to this great son of Africa. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
