In November, the SADC Business Council in partnership with the GIZ and the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF) held a Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) workshop with the Private sector in Tanzania. The following sectors were represented logistics, freight and exporting.
The meeting noted various major NTBs to trade between Tanzania and SADC countries including delays at Tunduma border post of between 15-30 days, infrastructure bottlenecks, Tasac fees and transit permits on goods originating from Tanzania for export in the DRC.
NTBs increase the cost of trade and undermine regional integration. Addressing them is important for improving intra-regional trade and integration.
More workshops will be held in Member States in the coming months. A work plan will be developed to address identified barriers at the SADC level.
