The SADC Secretariat in partnership with the Tanzanian Ministry of Industry and Trade, the SADC Business Council (hosted by NEPAD Business Foundation), and Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF) hosted the 4th SADC Industrialisation Week (SIW) 2019 between Monday, the 05th to Friday the 10th of August 2019 at the Mlimani City Conference Centre in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.
The event, themed A Conducive Environment for Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development, increased intra-Regional Trade, and Job Creation, was officially opened by His Excellency Dr. John Joseph Magufuli, President of the Republic of Tanzania and was officially closed by His Excellency Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council.
The SIW2019 targeted high-level delegates including SADC Ministers and senior policy makers from across the continent. Hosted on the margins of the 39th ordinary annual SADC Heads of States and Government Summit, recommendations and outputs from SIW2019 in the form of a declaration have been reported directly to the annual SADC Ministers Meeting, a body which determines policy discussions for Heads of State.
The annual SIW events are public-private engagement platforms aimed at fostering new opportunities for intra-African trade and investment in developing cross border value chains in the region. This year’s event specifically focused on the following:
- intra-regional and African trade, highlighting the opportunities and challenges for infrastructure development in Africa,
- measures and recommendations to develop sustainable Regional Value Chains (RVCs) in SADC,
- exploring the trade barriers and opportunities in industrial value chains(pharmaceuticals, mining, agro-processing, and gas),
- micro seminars on Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMME)development, digitisation and financing as well as factory site visits and product exhibitions.
